Simulations

A simulation consists in the sending of a ping request by a station or a router. You can launch it using the pop-up menu of the sender. From a station, you can ping an IP address or a host name (the resolution is carried out using the hosts file). From a router, the ping request has to relate to an IP address.

Four types of simulation are available:

  • Automatic: each station or router posts a "mini-demonstration" to illustrate its operation; each "mini-demonstration" will unfold automatically.
  • Step by step: idem, but the "mini-demonstrations" will not unfold automatically, it is the user who makes them progress (the "Enter" key can be used as a short cut).
  • No demonstration: no "mini-demonstration" is displayed.
  • Manual: the user himself or herself indicates the actions carried out by each component.

According to the type of simulation that you have chosen, two options are available:

  • ARP requests: if this option is activated, the exchanges related to the ARP protocol are taken into account in the simulation.
  • Slow motion (automatic or step-by-step): the simulation slows down.

You can choose the path followed by the packets during a simulation by using the drop-down list box.

You can act on the ARP caches of all stations and all routers of the network by using the "tables" menu:

The "static ARP entries" check box indicates the type of entries used to fill ARP caches with information (the static entries are recorded with the network).

As is the case in "Ethernet" mode, the content of the frame is displayed during the simulations, and you can find a balloon help on each one of its elements.

The "pause" button works in the same way as it does in "Ethernet" mode. It is only active for the "No demonstration" simulation.

The "stop" button (or "Bis" button) works in the same way as it does in "Ethernet" mode.
